5th grade Brightwater Water Treatment Plant Trip

On Tuesday, January 24th's, partnership day, the 5th graders had the opportunity to tour the new Brightwater Water Treatment Plant in Woodinville. The plant is part of King County's regional system that treats wastewater for about 1.5 million people. This plant opened last year after more than a decade of planning and building. One of Brightwater’s most significant features is the advanced treatment technology that will produce an effluent 70 percent cleaner than conventional wastewater technologies. We learned how Brightwater filters the five contaminants out of the wastewater in order to put clean, safe water back into Puget Sound. In the afternoon, students tested the pond and lake water around the treatment plant to assess the healthiness of Woodinville’s water. After investigating the aquatic macro-invertebrates living in their water samples, they determined the water was extremely healthy! The students had a fun-filled and informative day and left Brightwater with new ideas about what they can do to help make wastewater management more manageable.
